How Edgepoint Wealth Management works with you, from first call to yearly review

How we work at Edgepoint Wealth Management comes down to 5 steps, and each one starts with your income: what military pension, TSP and second-career pay must cover each month.

Investments come later. Edgepoint Wealth Management serves clients in all 50 states by video and phone, and the client minimum is $500,000 in investable assets.

Step 1: The first conversation

You describe your situation and we listen. Expect questions about your retirement date, your pension, whether a second career is paying you now and what a normal month costs your household.

Nothing is sold in this conversation. If Edgepoint Wealth Management isn't a fit, we'll say so.

Step 2: Gathering your information

Next you send the documents that show the whole picture. We'd rather see actual statements than estimates, because small gaps in TSP or pension figures change the income math.

Typical items are a recent TSP statement, your retirement pay statement, last year's tax return, and your second employer's benefits summary. Add any VA disability rating letter, since that income is not taxed and affects how much other income you need.

Step 3: Analysis and your written playbook

We build the income draws first. Say you're a hypothetical retiree needing $7,000 a month, with $3,500 from a military pension and $1,200 from VA disability. The gap is $2,300 a month, or $27,600 a year, and that is the number your savings must cover.

Only then do we look at investments. Before Edgepoint Wealth Management suggests moving money out of the TSP, it estimates what the move costs you in taxes and what you give up, such as the TSP's low fund costs.

You receive a written playbook covering military retirement planning, TSP rollover decisions and tax planning for veterans. No investment is guaranteed, and a portfolio can fall in value, sometimes for years, so the playbook also says how many months of spending we hold in cash.

Step 4: Putting the playbook to work

You decide what to act on, and we handle the paperwork with you. Rollovers and account changes follow a set order:

  • Open the receiving account and confirm its title.
  • Request a direct transfer so no check is made out to you.
  • Move money in stages if the tax cost is large.
  • Set up the monthly income draw once funds arrive.

Step 5: Reviews that follow your life

We review your playbook at least once a year, and sooner if something changes. A job change, a move to a new state or a pension adjustment all count.

Each review checks that income draws still match spending, looks at the tax bill for the year and rebalances where needed. Every fee is listed in your client agreement, and nothing outside that list is charged.

Frequently asked questions about Edgepoint Wealth Management

How long does the process take before I have a playbook?

It depends mostly on how fast you send documents. The first conversation is short, and the analysis starts once your TSP, pension and tax records arrive. Missing statements are the usual cause of delay, so gather them early.

Do I need to roll my TSP into an IRA to work with you?

No. Leaving the TSP where it is can be the right call, especially when its fund costs are low. Edgepoint Wealth Management compares both options with your income needs and the tax cost before you decide.

Can I meet with an advisor if I live outside Florida?

Yes. Edgepoint Wealth Management meets clients in all 50 states over video calls and by phone, so you don't need to visit the Tampa office. Use the request form to ask for a first conversation.
