What makes Edgepoint Wealth Management different for veterans?

At Edgepoint Wealth Management, the first review sets your monthly income draws before anyone mentions funds. We add up your military pension, VA pay and second-career salary, then work out what the TSP actually has to cover. You leave with a playbook listing each account and the year it starts paying. And before we suggest selling anything, we write down the tax cost so you see it first. Sometimes the answer is to leave things alone.

Why veterans work with Edgepoint Wealth Management

You left the service with a pension that already covers part of your bills, a TSP you may not touch for years and a second career that pushes your tax bracket up. Edgepoint Wealth Management treats that pension like a large bond holding and plans your income draws around it. That usually changes how much stock the TSP can carry, when Roth conversions pay off and what the Survivor Benefit Plan is worth to your spouse.

Your first conversation covers your pension, your TSP and your deadlines, in that order.

Edgepoint Wealth Management: wealth management built around military pay and the TSP

For military service members and veterans, Edgepoint Wealth Management offers wealth management that brings together a military pension, the Thrift Savings Plan and a second career after service. The firm maps out your monthly income draws before touching a single investment.

If you're about to leave the service, or you left a few years ago and the pension, TSP and civilian paycheck still sit in separate boxes, that's usually when people call. Our approach is income-first: decide what lands in your account each month, then choose investments that can support it. Edgepoint Wealth Management serves 372,000 clients and $8.3 billion in client assets as of 10/12/2026.

Who Edgepoint Wealth Management serves and how the work runs

Edgepoint Wealth Management works with people whose finances have a military shape: a pension that arrives on a fixed schedule, a TSP balance that may still be sitting in the service's plan, and a civilian salary that started after the uniform came off. The client minimum is $500K in investable assets. Clients live in all 50 states, and we meet by video call and by phone.

Three services cover most of what veterans ask about: military retirement planning, TSP rollover decisions and tax planning for veterans. You don't need all three. Some clients come for one question, such as whether to leave the TSP where it is, and stay for the rest.

The first conversation is a talk about your situation, not a sales pitch. You tell us what comes in each month and what you want to keep paying for. We tell you whether we're a fit, and sometimes the honest answer is not yet.

Every fee is listed in the client agreement, and nothing outside that list is charged. You can read the agreement before you decide anything.

A year of working together, season by season

Winter is paperwork season. Your pension statement, the TSP year-end statement and your W-2 from the second career arrive, and we check them against the income estimate in your playbook. If something moved, we say so and adjust the draws.

In spring we look at taxes. Before Edgepoint Wealth Management suggests any account change, it estimates the tax bill of making it, because a rollover or a sale that looks tidy on paper can push you into a higher bracket. Say your civilian salary rose in January; we'd rather learn that in March than April of next year.

Summer is for the quiet review. We check whether your cash reserve still covers a year or two of spending and whether the next income draws should come from savings or from the portfolio. Nothing dramatic happens in this season. That's the point.

Fall is when we look ahead. Open enrollment, a possible job change, a spouse's retirement date, year-end contribution deadlines: we put them on the calendar and decide what needs doing before December.

What questions are worth asking before choosing wealth management?

Start with how the firm treats a military pension, because many don't. A pension is income you can count on, and it changes how much risk the rest of your money needs to carry. Ask these before you sign anything:

  • How will you count my pension and survivor benefit when you set my monthly income draws?
  • What will you recommend for my TSP, and what does each option cost me in tax?
  • Which fees will I pay, and where are they all written down?
  • Who will I talk to each year, and how often?
  • What do you do when the portfolio drops 20 percent?
  • Is there an account minimum, and what happens if my balance falls below it?

A hypothetical veteran with a pension and a TSP

Take a hypothetical retired Army master sergeant, age 52, with a $3,000 a month pension, a $450,000 TSP balance and a $90,000 second-career salary. Add $100,000 in savings and the investable total is $550,000, above the $500K minimum. This is an illustration, not a real client.

She wants $7,000 a month after taxes in a few years. The pension covers $3,000. That leaves $4,000 a month, or $48,000 a year, to come from savings. We'd start by asking how many years of that $48,000 the cash and bonds could cover, so she isn't forced to sell stocks in a bad year.

Then comes the TSP question. Rolling it into an IRA could widen her investment choices, but she'd give up features of the TSP, and moving it could trigger tax if done wrong. Edgepoint Wealth Management would price both paths in dollars first and then let her pick.

The playbook she'd receive shows the monthly income draws, which account pays first, and the yearly tax estimate. No investment is guaranteed, and a portfolio like hers can lose value, sometimes for years.

The income gap

The TSP decision

Hypothetical example: $7,000 target minus $3,000 pension leaves $4,000 a month to fund.

What Edgepoint Wealth Management does, and doesn't do, when markets fall

When markets fall, we look at your income first. If your next 1 to 2 years of income draws sit in cash or short-term holdings, a drop in stocks doesn't force a sale at a low price. We check that buffer and tell you where it stands.

Edgepoint Wealth Management won't predict the bottom, move everything to cash on a headline or promise that your balance will come back. Nobody can do those things reliably. We also won't call you with a panicked sell recommendation.

What we do is simple. We rebalance only when it fits your income needs, look for tax losses worth harvesting, and tell you plainly what the drop means for your monthly draws. Sometimes the answer is to cut spending a little for a year. We'd rather say that than hide it.

  • We check your cash buffer first.
  • We look for tax losses before selling anything else.
  • We don't time the market.

Frequently asked questions about Edgepoint Wealth Management

Every fee Edgepoint Wealth Management charges is listed in the client agreement you receive before any work begins, and nothing outside that list is billed. We don't publish percentages on the website. Ask about cost in your first conversation and you'll get a straight answer with the agreement in front of you.

Yes, the $500,000 minimum is measured in investable assets, so your TSP, IRAs, a second-career 401(k) and brokerage accounts all count toward it. Your military pension and home equity don't, because you can't invest them. Edgepoint Wealth Management adds the accounts together; no single balance has to reach the minimum.

A member of our team contacts you to schedule a first conversation by video or phone. Have your pension estimate, latest TSP statement and any job offer handy. Edgepoint Wealth Management uses those three documents to sketch your income draws before investments come up at all.

You'll speak with an advisor who works on income planning, and the first conversation covers your pension, your Survivor Benefit Plan choice and your TSP. Bring questions about a second-career 401(k) too. There's no script; the conversation follows your dates and your accounts.

Not automatically. The TSP has low costs and simple options, while an IRA offers more investment choices and easier income draws. Edgepoint Wealth Management compares both in dollars, including the tax cost of moving, and then you decide. A direct rollover avoids withholding problems.

A military pension is treated as steady income that covers part of your monthly spending. Edgepoint Wealth Management subtracts it from your target first, so the portfolio only has to fund the gap. That often means you need less investment risk than a civilian with the same balance.

Yes. Edgepoint Wealth Management works with clients in all 50 states through video calls and phone, so your location doesn't change how the work runs. If you're abroad, time zones matter more than distance. Keep in mind that state tax rules on retirement income differ, so check yours.

Maybe not. If the pension covers nearly all your spending and your savings are small, you probably don't need ongoing help. Edgepoint Wealth Management's approach pays off when there's a gap to fund, taxes to manage across a pension, TSP and salary, and at least $500K to invest.

You can often leave it in the TSP while you work, and many people do. The decision depends on your tax bracket, your new employer's plan and your plans for income draws. Edgepoint Wealth Management reviews these together before suggesting a move, so you don't change accounts for the wrong reason.
